Acupuncture is an ancient system of healing developed in Asia and practiced for over 2500 years. It is used to treat specific illnesses, to anticipate and prevent diseases, and to promote well-being.

Acupuncture works to bring qi (pronounced chee), the basic life force or energy, into balance. Qi flows through the body along twelve main meridians (pathways). It should flow freely and in correct strength and quality within each meridian. In illness, qi is out of balance, and the pain or symptom is a distress signal notifying us of the imbalance.

Acupuncture influences qi at specific sites on a meridian through the gentle insertion of thin, sterilized stainless steel needles. Qi is then brought into greater balance, which helps the body heal itself.

In Japan, there has been a long tradition of training the blind to practice acupuncture and massage. A very gentle style of practice has developed that emphasizes sensitive palpation as a tool for both diagnosis and treatment. This unique method creates a holistic view of the body, immediately providing the practitioner with both structural and energetic information concerning the effectiveness and the direction of treatment.

Most people will need a course of treatment to achieve lasting results. The number and frequency of treatments necessary to resolve a particular complaint is unique to each individual. We will discuss this in depth at your first visit.

Acupuncture sessions are an hour to an hour and fifteen minutes. It is best to wear comfortable clothing.

Acupuncture can help prevent disease. The acupuncturist can identify small imbalances in an individual and correct them before the body has developed symptoms.

After a symptom arises, acupuncture can help restore the body’s energetic balance. The range of symptoms and diseases acupuncture can treat is very broad and includes the following:

• Musculoskeletal problems such as headaches, stiff neck, back pain, sciatica and tendonitis
• Internal problems such as asthma, IBS, colitis, indigestion and diabetes
• Gynecological problems such as PMS and infertility
• Respiratory problems such as the common cold, allergies and sinus congestion
• Mental and emotional problems such as anxiety, depression, insomnia and stress
• Other benefits are increased energy and vitality, stress reduction, deep relaxation, weight control and much more.
